What is an ionic air purifier, and why would you want one? True, the air these days is sometimes not fit to breath. Forget about the smog outside; there are still odors and chemicals in the air inside your home.

You know you need one, by why ionic? How do they work, and is it better than other kinds?

How Air Purifiers Work

First, there are the traditional ones. These generally work by using a filter. There are, however, that use ozone or an electrical attraction in order clean and purify the air.

Air is drawn into the filter, which acts as a sieve to trap allergens, such as pet dander and dusts. The air flows back out cleaned, and ready to breath. This is a great boon to anyone who suffers from allergies or who has asthma.

Air purifiers have come into the forefront the last ten years especially. With homes having mold infestations, formaldehydes released by carpeting, smoke, viruses, pollen, bacteria and other unhealthy objects floating around in the air, purifiers are becoming more important.

And it's not just breathing that suffers; red itchy eyes and sinus issues can be caused by all these irritants. What's more, some of these can be quite harmful, like black mold.

Why an Ionic Air Purifier?

Now that you know how traditional ones work, what's the difference with an ionic purifier? Don't they use filters are well? No, they work in a different method.

An ionic air purifier works via a corona discharge. What's that, you ask? It's where charged particles (called ions) are created that are born to trap irritants and odors by creating an electrical field. Here's how it works.

Everyday particles in the air, such as dust or dander, inherently have a neutral charge. They are neutral because they are comprised of both positive (protons) and negative (electrons) in their makeup.

As they careen around in the air, the contaminants can knock against each other, and in the process leave each other with a positive or negative charge.

Inside the purifier are metal plates, which have either a positive or a negative charge. When an ion grabs (so to speak) onto one of the charged air particles, it's drawn towards the plates. At this point, the negative particles are attracted to the positive plate, and the positive particles are attracted to the negative one.

It's at this point that the contaminants settle out of the air and onto the plates, which in a sense, act as filters. Once the ionic air purifier has been running for some weeks, you can take out the plates and you'll see that they are covered with black matter - particles they have removed from the air.

All you need to do to an ionic air purifier is wipe down the plates and put them back into the purifier, which usually only takes a minute or two.

Are They Safe?

These machines have their proponents and critics. One is that these purifiers are meant to be used in a room, and don't cover large areas well. However, this is a statement that can be aimed at many traditional purifiers as well.

The second issue critics have is that a small amount of ozone is released during this process. Ozone can be toxic to the body, although manufacturers say that the amount is so tiny and localized that it presents no hazard.

In any case, if you decide to buy one, choose an ionic air purifier that puts out fewer than fifty parts per billion of ozone.

Wellness Shower -ionization is a natural process occurring as a result of particle collisions, during which a molecule has gained or lost an electron. The first group is called "negative ions" (beneficial for health); whereas the latter is known as "positive ions" (harmful to humans).
